Hi Ryan,

Thanks for getting in touch. I'd be interested to hear some of your thoughts about neo-monasticism. I think in many ways it has become a buzz word for what is actually taking place. Some people have also called neo-monasticism - monasticism-lite. My major concern in regard to neo-monasticism is their eschewing of authority as it relates to obedience. In particular, we can see this in their avoidance of one aspect of traditional monasticism, i.e. vows.

Would love to hear more.

Pax,
J

thanks for the nod.

One thing now occurs to me. It's not so much that Williams "attempts" synthesis but that he allows it.

He sees himself as a passive chairman in the whole thing. He is not driving one or the other side forward, simply facilitating the dialectic.

Of course, it's disastrous. But it's worth us working hard at understanding him as well as possible.

Well said. In the end, I think that under the current ++Cantuar we will not do so. The damage being done is to both communion and the office of ++Cantuar. In the end, ++Cantuar is an Hegelian at heart and will always attempt synthesis. (see: David Ould)

By the way, how are you guys doing? I just got back from Savannah where I attended Chapter for the Anglican Order of Preachers (Dominicans). I am now a novice in the Order. It was good experience, in more ways than one. Being in Savannah in particular was a pleasure. Had a chance to go to Christ Church, home to Wesley, Whitefield, etc.

Would love to hear how things are...

So if the Anglican Communion is now analogous to Purgatory then that means as long as we're under ++Cantuar, we'll never make it to the corresponding Paradise.

Doulos Christou,

Thanks for your comment. I agree that one must begin with humility, found through the kenosis of Christ. However, our humility must be shaped and moulded to produce fruit. Obviously, this is from the Holy Spirit. Yet, the tradition of the Church and the Church Fathers have passed down 'disciplines' which also aid us in this quest. Led by the Holy Spirit, in the body of the Church, we need to return to the 'old paths' once traveled by our spiritual Fathers and Mothers and reclaim a 'way' of discipleship which truly makes disciples rather than consumers.

The article contributes much to the discussion but it is a symptom of the greater consumerism that has infected the church. Christians want their faith delivered to them, there is little investment anymore in the pursuit of holiness. You said "Recently, I’ve been dialoguing/thinking/praying in a new way about spiritual formation. " We begin with humility of self, an attitude that is completely at odds with the modern world in which we try to serve. Blessings and peace.
